Quakers join other Christian faith groups to send symbolic Eid greetings to the Muslim community
Quakers in Britain joined other Christian faith groups to send symbolic greetings of peace and prayers to the Muslim community this Eid.
The gesture is the first of its kind. Leaders from a wide range of British Christian denominations presented the printed and framed ‘Eid Mubarak’ message at the East London Mosque on Friday 9 August. Anne van Staveren, media relations officer for Quakers in Britain, attended alongside David Henshaw, interfaith representative for London Quakers.
The greeting said: ‘Aware of the recent attacks on mosques and Muslims, we want to stand with you against any discrimination or violence targeting any community or person because of their faith. Instead, we want to work for more positive interaction between Christians and Muslims, demonstrating the love for God and neighbour to which we are called.’
Muhammad Abdul Bari, chairman of the East London Mosque and former secretary general of the Muslim Council of Britain, said: ‘I’m very moved by these greetings from our Christian friends. There is much that we can do together to promote peace.’
The celebration of Eid marks the end of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.
