The Living Witness group is relaunching EarthQuaker magazine in an attempt to spur more action on climate justice.

Laurie Michaelis, coordinator of Living Witness, told the Friend that ‘EarthQuaker was published first as a paper newsletter in the early 1990s by Quaker Green Concern, which was renamed as Quaker Green Action in 2002 and merged with Living Witness in 2008. We decided to lay EarthQuaker down in 2018 because we were struggling to find a volunteer editor, and several other Quaker organisations were producing newsletters covering climate and related issues. However, those dried up immediately afterwards.’

The decision to relaunch follows the development of ‘new energy’ in Living Witness following its 2022 gathering, he said. ‘There are also a lot of other new climate-related activities around Britain Yearly Meeting, but Living Witness is the most established community of engaged Friends. We are hoping that the other groups will feel supported by our events and publications, and able to connect and witness through them.’

With a first edition planned for 1 November, the editorial group members are: Lis Burch, Sean Jacke, Kathryn May, Laurie Michaelis and Catherine Tilke. The magazine will be published on the Living Witness website.

In a message sent out to Living Witness members, Laurie Michaelis said: ‘Our intention is that EarthQuaker will be a community space for Quakers engaging with climate and ecological crisis. It should enable Friends engaged in different ways to share experiences, spiritual insights and learning, and to ask and respond to questions.’
