A Quaker will cycle to George Osborne’s constituency office this week – to give him a copy of Charles Dickens’ festive classic A Christmas Carol. Alan Pinch from Manchester and Warrington Area Meeting believes that the chancellor is at risk of ‘turning into a modern day Scrooge’.

Alan will be joined by Anglican Graham Martin and Catholic Stephen Pennells on a twenty-mile ride from Manchester’s Albert Square to George Osborne’s constituency office in Knutsford. They will make stops along the route so that members of the public can sign a statement to the chancellor.

‘It’s a bit of festive fun with a very serious message at a time when many families are being forced to choose between heating and eating,’ said Alan. The trio argue that government policies risk returning Britain to the levels of poverty, inequality and contempt for the poor that are described in Dickens’ tale of repentance.
