Devon Quakers host beach labyrinth

Exmouth Quakers teamed up with local sand artist Paul Burton this month to create a beach labyrinth in the sand.

The Devon Friends said the labyrinth on Orcombe Beach on 2 September was designed to enable spiritual contemplation. ‘Entering the path of a labyrinth, you walk slowly while quieting your mind and focusing on a spiritual question or prayer. Many people joined us throughout the afternoon and took the opportunity to take some time out from their busy lives and undertake this spiritual practice surrounded by the beauty and wonder of the sand, rocks and sea at Orcombe Point.’

According to the Midweek Herald, a local newspaper website, people who walked the labyrinth described how ‘it helped them to slow down and listen to the waves and notice the sand under their feet’. They also said that ‘they learned to surrender to the experience, not knowing how to get to the centre, and having to let go and trust the path’.

Pip Harris, the local development worker for the region, described it as a ‘beautiful afternoon and an awesome piece of outreach’ on social media. See Eye.
