Departure
A poem by Stanley Holland
I am part of what once was
But might be so again.
Did we love once? Were we one?
Two hearts with but a single rhythm?
And were there children?
Whose eyes had they?
Your beauty and your brains?
And just a touch of me perhaps?
And were there sorrows mingled with the joys?
Some griefs are gone, but some,
A plaintive few, are left.
Sorrow has a long shelf-life.
Night is fast coming
But will there be another dawn?
Some great awaking to another life?
Or will the gate be shut forever?
Perhaps among the shards
A trace may still remain,
A look, a glance perhaps,
That stirs a memory.
I forget so many things.
I am good at forgetting.
The wheel turns full circle,
And soon all this shall be forgotten.
