‘Day to remember’ at Friends House

Two books launched at Friends House

by Ian Kirk-Smith 23rd May 2014

David Blake, head of library and archives of Friends House Library, described 15 May as a ‘day to remember’ when he introduced an event in the afternoon to launch two books on the history of conscientious objection in Britain.

Objection Overruled by David Boulton and Comrades in Conscience by Cyril Pearce offer two different perspectives on the subject and both authors spoke eloquently at the launch on the background and themes of their work.

David Boulton remembered how, fifty years earlier, the idea of the book was supported by members of the Tribune Group, such as Michael Foot, and that 20,000 copies were sold in the first year. The new edition of Objection Overruled, he said, had been much expanded, with an appendix and 12,000 words added.

Comrades in Conscience concentrates on COs within a local community in Huddersfield and author Cyril Pearce stressed the importance of recording ‘the view from Huddersfield Town Hall steps as well as that from Westminster’.
