International Conscientious Objectors Day is to be marked on 15 May

by The Friend Newsdesk 11th May 2012

A strong Quaker presence is anticipated next Tuesday at noon in Tavistock Square, London, to mark International Conscientious Objectors Day.

Each year a brief ceremony is held at the ‘Commemorative Stone’ in Tavistock Square, during which the names of representative people who ‘maintained the right to refuse to kill’ are read out.

A white flower is also laid on the stone for each of the fifty people remembered. The aim of the day is to raise awareness of those who refuse, for moral or religious reasons, to participate in armed conflict.
