Conscientious objector joins the Peace Hub celebration in Birmingham
Official opening of a new peace centre in Birmingham
Second world war conscientious objector Hugh Maw was among those marking the official opening of a new peace centre in Birmingham.
The Peace Hub, a Central England Quakers project, opened on 26 February. Local school children and members of the public joined Paul Sabapthy, lord lieutenant for the West Midlands, and deputy lord mayor Mike Leddy, to celebrate over tea and cake.
The same evening local NGOs and faith groups discussed the Peace Hub’s role in the community with Tim Watts, high sheriff of West Midlands.
More than eighty people attended over the course of the day. Friends celebrated the work done so far and outlined upcoming projects.
Hugh Maw helped introduce the Peace Hub’s next theme, Conscientious Objection, which has been chosen to support Central England Quakers’ Faith and Action exhibition at the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.
