Conference highlights building peace in diverse Britain
Inspiring talk at Northern Friends Peace Board event
An inspiring talk on the experience of being a Muslim woman growing up in West Yorkshire and working for peace in the area was a highlight of a recent Northern Friends Peace Board (NFPB) event.
Between forty-five and fifty Friends met at Carlton Hill Meeting House in Leeds, including representatives from as far afield as North Scotland and Nottingham, at the NFPB conference on 28 February.
Friends were joined by Mashuda Shaikh, heritage office for Kirklees Local Authority and part of the board’s ‘Building Peace in Diverse Britain’ project group, who gave an engaging and interesting talk.
She spoke from a personal perspective about her work promoting mutual understanding, peace and participation, and focused on the importance of empowering women and supporting young people in becoming active citizens.
At lunch, attendees helped Leeds Friends to move a large silhouette of a Trident submarine onto the steps of the nearby university buildings for a short act of witness. In the afternoon the group focused on peace concerns in relation to the general election.
