CND highlights fifty-seven per cent who don’t embrace nuclear weapons
CND have highlighted the results of a poll commissioned at The Times
The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) has said that the general election result shouldn’t necessarily be interpreted as reflecting ‘a growing enthusiasm’ for nuclear weapons.
The organisation pointed to a poll commissioned by The Times during the election period which showed that only a minority of people said the prime minister should be willing to authorise the use of nuclear weapons – with fifty-seven per cent saying they shouldn’t or didn’t know. It also highlighted the fact that Liberal Democrat leader Jo Swinson was ‘heavily criticised for her glib “yes” response to whether she would press the nuclear button’ and she ‘went on to lose her seat to a candidate from the anti-Trident Scottish National Party’.
However, the organisation also acknowledged that ‘the Conservative majority in Westminster will leave many feeling pessimistic’ and urged pacifists to come together to ‘give voice to the growing millions who oppose nuclear weapons’. It added: ‘We must strengthen our links and solidarity with other campaigning organisations and movements who strive to build a better, just, more peaceful world.’
