Circles broadcast appeal postponed
Charity appeal for Circles postponed
The charity appeal for Circles of Support and Accountability, to have been broadcast on BBC Radio 4 on Sunday 4 November, has been postponed. The appeal was to have been given by the distinguished barrister and human rights campaigner Helena Kennedy. It was postponed because of a ‘shared concern that, given the volume of current public anger and disquiet around recent high-profile revelations of abuse, the essential message that Circles of Support and Accountability are about the prevention of further sexual abuse may not be heard as clearly as we want it to be’.
The postponement comes at a time when the project celebrates ten extremely successful years in Britain. It is also on the eve of a Circles Volunteer Conference to be held in Birmingham on 10 November.
There is now a real prospect that new national Circles programmes will be established in several European countries, including Latvia and Bulgaria. Countries such as Sweden, Estonia and France are expressing interest. The project hopes that, with EU funding, a European network can be established with Circles schemes in member countries and research opportunities across participating European states.
The concept of Circles in Britain was initially prompted and supported by Quakers. In 2008, following a successful pilot, Circles of Support and Accountability was launched as an independent charity.
