Christians need to be open to change

A message from the Methodist Conference in Plymouth

by Symon Hill 6th July 2012

The new president and the vice-president of the Methodist Conference have said that Christians need to be more open to change and to welcome people as they are. They were speaking at the annual gathering of Britain’s Methodists, held in Plymouth from 28 June to 5 July.

The president, Mark Wakelin, said that God welcomes everyone but also challenges everyone to change. The vice-president, Michael King, insisted that Christianity is about following Jesus rather than obeying a book of rules.

He said: ‘The person whose lifestyle, or sexuality, or abilities, or impairments seem very different – how is it possible for them to minister to a fellowship that has become at ease with itself, or too comfortable with its own exclusive view of the world?’
