Number of Christians in England and Wales drops

The number of Christians living in England and Wales has fallen by four million in the past decade, the 2011 census reveals.

The data shows that numbers fell from 37.3 million in 2001 to 33.2 million last year, a twelve per cent fall.

People who identified themselves as Muslims in 2011 numbered 2.7 million. This figure is up from 1.55 million in 2001. Muslims now make up five per cent of the population, compared with three per cent in 2001.

The census revealed that 46.6 per cent of people are married.  It also showed that 0.2 per cent – some 105,000 people – are in a civil partnership.
