Canterbury Quakers remembered five years since the lockdown for the Covid 19 pandemic began, last month.

Rosemarie John, from Canterbury Meeting, said that Friends had created a remembrance tree for the anniversary on 23 March, to allow people to reflect on this time in the Meeting house’s peaceful garden.

‘The children played a major part by exploring their memories, and their parents spoke movingly of how hard that time was – especially when babies were born during lockdown,’ she said.

‘We created this memorial in our garden for March with multicoloured ribbons, hearts and mementos. The children immediately ran in and out of the long ribbons as soon as they were put up. Adults in Meeting contributed their own memories in hearts and tags after the Meeting for Worship. We invited passers-by to add cards and ribbons to the memory tree – either with the materials provided or by bringing their own.’
