Campsfield expansion on hold
Success sees withdrawal of plans
The application was submitted by the Home Office and the Ministry of Justice. It was withdrawn on 12 March on the instruction of the home secretary.
‘This is a great achievement for Stop Campsfield Expansion, a coalition of local organisations which has devoted an enormous amount of time and energy into challenging the plans,’ said Bridget Walker of the Quaker Asylum and Refugee Network (QARN).
Carol Day, of Leigh Day, the solicitors acting for Stop Campsfield Expansion, said: ‘This is the right decision and very good news’.
Bridget Walker stressed that the struggle does not end here. Referring to suggestions made in the Detention Inquiry report, covered in the Friend on 13 March, she said: ‘We hope that the new government in May will give serious consideration to community-based alternatives to detention, and that this will lead to the ending of all immigration detention, which we believe is neither right nor necessary’.
