Call for films to celebrate George Fox

Quaker groups and Children’s Meetings are being invited to make a short film to celebrate the 400th anniversary of George Fox’s birth.

The programme has been launched by Quaker Arts Network (QAN) in partnership with Britain Yearly Meeting’s (BYM) Children and Young People’s committee, as part of the celebration of George Fox’s 400th anniversary in 2024: ‘We are inviting Children’s Meetings, Quaker Schools, Local Meetings and any other interested Quaker groups to make very short films which will be posted on the QAN website and we hope used for outreach in other ways. We are looking for a range of imaginative ideas, and a high level of professional skill is not essential.’

John Lampen, from the network, told the Friend that the project was inspired by three things: ‘the wish to celebrate George Fox’s fourth centenary, the idea of setting up an arts opportunity for Children’s Meetings and groups (though not confined to them), and wanting to encourage film-making, an art form we hadn’t thought about previously.’

Some early selections of films can already be watched on the website https://quakerarts.net/projects/fox400. These include a tribute to Fox by Amanda Jones, a dramatic monologue by the early Friend Elizabeth Hooton from Journeymen Theatre, and in the pipeline an animation of Fox’s travels in the US from Stourbridge Children’s Meeting.
More information and a sample film can be found on the QAN website, where detailed notes of guidance can be downloaded.
