Call by FWCC for prayer and action on peace
Churches called to observe the International Day of Prayer for Peace
Each year on 21 September the World Council of Churches calls on churches to observe the UN International Day of Prayer for Peace. It is also the UN–sponsored International Day of Peace.
Friends World Committee for Consultation (FWCC) general secretary Gretchen Castle said the International Day of Prayer for Peace offers an opportunity for Friends in all places to pray and act together.
‘Our collective voices,’ she said, ‘bring strength to our convictions, allowing us to feel the current of the spiritual stream. The United Nations and the World Council of Churches calls on the human family and the Christian family to come together with the strength of conviction to overcome violence and pray for peace.’
Gretchen added: ‘The World Office of the Friends World Committee for Consultation, along with our four Section offices in Asia West Pacific, Africa, Europe and the Middle East, and the Americas, call on Friends around the world to pray for peace as a collective action.
‘From individual prayers, to lighting a candle, to encouraging your Meeting for Worship to participate, our actions, no matter how small, add to others’ acts, and form a world intention for peace. Let us share our longing for peace with each other.’
