BYM joins voices against annexes
Quakers speak out against Israeli government plans to annex more Palestinian land
Britain Yearly Meeting (BYM) has joined with humanitarian, development and faith organisations to oppose Israeli government plans from 1 July to ‘annex more Palestinian land’.
Paul Parker, BYM recording clerk, said: ‘Our Quaker commitment to peace and equality compel us to speak out against the threat by the government of Israel to annexe further parts of occupied Palestine. Annexation is a serious breach of international law and would make permanent the many injustices and violations of human rights arising from the military occupation of Palestine.’
The statement sent on 29 June says the UK government’s response to the plans have been ‘lacklustre’ and urges it ‘to heed the recent warning of forty-seven UN human rights experts that annexation “would be the crystallisation of an already unjust reality: two peoples living in the same space, ruled by the same state, but with profoundly unequal rights.” Most importantly, it should listen to the voices of Palestinians – teachers, health workers, farmers, businesspeople, students, school children, and all others – whose lives are already made intolerable by the occupation.’
Comments
This long-standing Israeli- Palestine conflict has existed for over 100 years and theIsraeli Government decision to annex more land on the West Bank for religious settlers, condemned internationally, will ensure that the conflict will continue.
The British Government’s response to Israeli Government’s actions has been lukewarm
compared to its actions towards the Chinese over Hong Kong.
When we appreciate that conflict exists in Israel between religious Zionism, secularists, and theocracy on what constitutes a Jewish State Netanyahu’s delayed
action is partially recognized, even though he can always rely on the President of USA for support.
