'The Supreme Court judgement does not change our unwavering commitment to upholding the spirit of the minute...'

Britain Yearly Meeting (BYM) put out a statement in support of trans and non-binary Friends after the Supreme Court’s ruling last week.

The ruling stated that ‘woman’ and ‘sex’ in the Equality Act refer only to a biological woman.

Posting on social media, BYM acknowledged that many trans and non-binary Friends ‘may be feeling sad, angry or deeply worried’ after the judgement. ‘Remember that each one of you is unique, precious and a child of God.’

Referring to Yearly Meeting’s decision in 2021 to affirm and acknowledge gender diversity within the Quaker community, BYM said: ‘The Supreme Court judgement does not change our unwavering commitment to upholding the spirit of the minute, which is clear in our intent to build a welcoming and loving community for all trans and gender diverse Friends.’

Thank you for supporting us. I said at last weekend’s Meeting for Worship how welcome I felt at our meeting house and thanked those present for being so supportive. I don’t use the term ‘woman’ at all - I’ve never really liked it - but I am female on my birth certificate. I shouldn’t have to show a scan of it on my phone to prove I am who (or what) I am though. Lucky I have a disabled badge too? Or not?
