Andrew Greaves reflects on his early experiences as a prison chaplain

It was Northumbria Area Meeting just over a year ago. The occasion was the launch of Twelve Prisoners and Quakers: Friendly Voices from HMP Frankland.

Two Quaker chaplains read the testimony of a group of prisoners serving long sentences in a maximum security jail near Durham. The prisoners spoke inspiringly of how they had discovered in Meeting for Worship fresh hope, inner renewal and peace, even amidst the aridity and repressed violence of their daily routine behind bars. It made me want to find out more about this closed and isolated world.
