Building a culture of sanctuary

Quakers around Britain to mark Refugee Week

Quakers in Britain have announced a packed programme of events to mark Refugee Week on 19-25 June. A highlight will be the visit of internationally acclaimed authors to Friends House to take part in a series of ‘in conversation’ interviews in the Quaker Bookshop.

The line-up includes Coco Khan, who contributed to the acclaimed essay collection The Good Immigrant. She speaks on 19 June. Hassan Abdulrazzak, writer of A Country of Refuge, will be at the bookshop on 20 June. Gulwali Passarlay, author of the The Lightless Sky, will visit on 21 June and the series concludes with Roma Tearne, author of Brixton Beach, on 22 June.

Clun Valley Meeting, acting in memory of murdered MP Jo Cox, has teamed up with Wolverhampton City of Sanctuary to host an away-day in and around Bishop’s Castle in Shropshire for fifty refugees and asylum seekers.

In Birmingham, Doncaster, Glasgow and Wanstead, Quakers are hosting theatre performances and discussions on the theme of forced migration.

In London the library of the Society of Friends in Friends House will be open on 19 June to display two centuries worth of artefacts from Quakers who have welcomed people seeking sanctuary.

Refugee Week takes place every year across the world in the week around World Refugee Day on 20 June.

Anne Van Staveren, of Friends House, said: ‘Friends can book for all events at www.quaker.org.uk/migration.’
