Quaker 'bubbles' considered

by The Friend 31st May 2013

Bubbles were in the air at Yearly Meeting on Monday morning.  In the ‘As Led’ session a Friend spoke of her concern over the ‘bubble’ of Friends associated with Woodbrooke and Friends House, who ‘have the connections’, and those who were not involved in this, seemingly exclusive, Quaker world.

There was a challenge, she suggested, in disseminating the values ‘we find here’ to those who were not in attendance at Yearly Meeting over the bank holiday weekend.

The image, which seemed in danger of floating towards some contentious turbulance, was brought back to calmer air when another Friend said that the most significant ‘bubble’ was the wonderful one ‘of the present’ – the one that Friends had entered into at the start of Yearly Meeting. There were approving nods around the room.
