The first generation of Friends carried out one of the most vigorous and widespread evangelical missions in the history of Christianity. The huge impact of this preaching campaign indicates not only that they were expressing something worth hearing, but also that they were extremely effective communicators. The evidence suggests that many of these early Quakers were gifted orators, accomplished writers and creative publicists. It is clear that they took advantage of every possible method of communication available to them.
