Britain Yearly Meeting 2016: Conscience and conscription exhibition

A exhibition at Friends House reflected first world war witness

by The Friend 3rd June 2016

The library and corridors of Friends House during Yearly Meeting hosted an impressive exhibition of Quaker witness on conscience and conscription during the first world war.

The newly restored section of a triptych in watercolour, gouache and pencil by Friends Ambulance Unit (FAU) member Duncan Wood, illustrating a busy stretch of road leading to La Panne on the Belgian front, is on display.

The FAU SSA-14 convoy is depicted in the panels. This is the first time the middle and right-hand panels have been shown together in 100 years. Unfortunately, the left-hand panel is missing. A detail from one of the panels is shown above.

Some documents reflected how Quakers regarded both combatants and non-combatants, and others how harshly the authorities had treated conscientious objectors in the first world war.

It is very moving to see yet another product of Duncan’s wonderful imagination.  Clearly this is not a war horse but is being used for peaceful purposes, in typical Duncan style.
