Book lovers descended on the historic Winchmore Hill Meeting house in north London on Saturday 12 April as local Friends held their fifth annual book sale.  Thousands of books were on offer at bargain prices and the event, organised by Winchmore Hill Friends and Amnesty, was another ‘resounding success.’

Stephen Cox, of Winchmore Hill Meeting, said: ‘We have grown the event to twice the profit of the first sale. The collaboration has become a local fixture.’

The sale, as well as a fundraising exercise, has become an important opportunity for outreach. He added: ‘Publicity for the book sale, soliciting books and reporting success, reminds people about the Meeting. The event ties us into our immediate locality.

‘Amnesty run a campaigning stall and the Quakers offer tea and cake, as well as showing off the historic Meeting house, discussing Quaker worship and witness, and inviting interested people to find out more. Worship the day after the sale was full and optimistic, despite creaking joints. There is value in common endeavour.’

Stephen Cox believes other Meetings could enjoy the success of Winchmore Hill.

He said: ‘Books for Amnesty would be interested in discussing similar sales with Quaker Meetings outside London who are willing to offer a suitable venue from the afternoon of the day before the sale.’
