Bolton Friends were among a group of 100 people who turned out for an ‘anti-hate’ march and vigil on 10 June in the town.

The march and vigil in Breightmet was organised after a thirty-nine-year-old woman was hospitalised following an assault the previous week. The incident is part of a recent spate of attacks in the town and is being treated by police as a ‘hate crime’.

Ian McHugh, from Bolton Meeting, told the Friend: ‘The woman, who lived in the area and was born in Sudan, was out walking with her three children in broad daylight when she was hit about the head. Local mums organised the event, which brought a range of residents, churches, trades unions and local councillors together in a walk from the Catholic church to a vigil at the place where she was attacked to demonstrate that the community is united in her support.’

Representatives from the Bolton Destitution Project, The Sanctuary Bolton, Bolton Stand Up To Racism, Bolton Against Racism and the National Education Union (NEU) also took part.
