Bird on the wire

It was a chance meeting
as they often are
when you’re really doing
something else, or going
somewhere with purpose
as I was that day,
in my moveable house,
wheels at each side,
spinning along –
earth-bound traveller.

I didn’t get wings like you,
and I saw your incredulous
gaze as I passed, with your
shoulders hunched
and your perfect poise,
and that frown you wore as
you swivelled your eyes to meet
mine; which they did. I saw –
and it made me smile – that
quizzical stare between strangers –
earth-bird and you of the sky.

I love this and the humour it poses.  I could easily imagine the look of puzzlement in the bird’s eyes as it looked down on you encased in your tin box with four wheels.  Most of all, I like how the bird comes across as being better equipped for travel, despite how humankind somehow thinks it’s superior to every other creature.
