Quakers welcome publication of a bill to legalise same sex marriage

by Symon Hill 1st February 2013

Quakers have welcomed the publication of a bill to legalise same sex marriage in England and Wales.

The Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill was published last week and will be debated by MPs on 5 February.

The bill allows religious bodies to carry out legally recognised same sex weddings if their ‘governing body’ decides to ‘opt in’. The exceptions are the Church of England and the (Anglican) Church in Wales, who will not be allowed to opt in.

Britain Yearly Meeting’s recording clerk, Paul Parker, who has been interviewed about same sex marriage on national television and radio, said: ‘This is good news. We believe we are all born equal and, therefore, our love is equal too. This is the change in law we have been seeking.’

Friends have been asked to encourage their MP to support the bill before its second reading on Tuesday 5 February.

Friends wanting guidance for writing letters should see www.quaker.org.uk/equal-marriage
