Bewdley Quakers join vigil at Roxel factory
Friends in Bewdley have joined a vigil outside the Roxel factory in Kidderminster
Bewdley Quakers were among those protesting with other Christian peace campaigners outside the Roxel factory in Kidderminster. Roxel manufactures propulsion systems for missiles.
The vigil on 10 September remembered victims of war in Yemen and was organised by Midlands Christian Action, a group made up of many denominations, including Methodists, Catholics and Quakers.
Quaker Mart Layton told the Friend that the UK has exported tens of millions of pounds worth of missiles to Saudi Arabia since March 2013, which has contributed to the deaths of several thousand civilians.
He said: ‘It is important for Quakers to support actions like this, as, locally, there is something of a conspiracy of silence surrounding this factory.
‘We should be acknowledging the suffering that missile production causes, and exposing the truth about the British arms trade’s complicity in Saudi Arabia’s bombing campaign in Yemen. Prayer vigils are a simple way of expressing our hope for peace.’
Twenty-five people attended the vigil, which was the second protest at the factory in six months.
