BBC film in Friends House
An item was filmed at Friends House for the BBc
A team from the BBC visited the library in Friends House on 10 March to film an item for BBC News at Ten and to record a piece for BBC Radio Four news.
Alan Little interviewed Charlotte Marten, cousin of conscientious objector Howard Marten, in the library strongrooms. Friends House Meeting member Charlotte reminisced about her cousin, who was an absolutist conscientious objector and sentenced to death for his beliefs. He was later reprieved.
Howard’s writing forms part of the White Feather Diaries project. Jane Dawson, advocacy and public relations team leader for Britain Yearly Meeting, said of the interview: ‘It was fabulous. It feels like the culmination of the White Feather Diaries project.’
Earlier this year Britain Yearly Meeting marked the centenary of the passing of the Military Service Act, and the introduction of a ‘conscience clause’, with an event at Westminster.
Filming also took place at the Imperial War Museum.
Both the film and radio interview will be broadcast in March, on a yet-to-be-announced date.
