A plaque commemorating the Quaker Bayard Rustin has been unveiled in New York

The Quaker and black civil rghts activist Bayard Rustin, who was a close associate of Martin Luther King and an advocate of gay and lesbian rights, had a commemorative plaque unveiled on 28 June outside his long-time residence at Penn South, New York.

Corey Johnson, speaker of the New York City Council, said: ‘With this new memorial at Penn South, our community is celebrating Bayard Rustin’s many achievements, including his commitment towards all of humanity regardless of any of the superficial barriers that may seem to separate us. It’s a lesson we would do well to heed today.’

Penn South is an affordable housing cooperative.
