Bath Quaker to ‘Live Below the Line’
Wren Sidhe to join those living on less than £1 a day from 7 to 11 May
A Quaker in Bath will spend no more than a pound a day on her food and drink next week. Wren Sidhe is joining the ‘Live Below the Line’ challenge, launched by Christian Aid in solidarity with the world’s poorest people.
People of many faiths and none will join in from 7-11 May. Most will be sponsored, raising funds for Christian Aid.
Wren had mixed feelings when encouraged to sign up by her daughter. She decided to follow the encouragement of Advices and Queries to ‘live adventurously’.
She told the Friend: ‘I hope this will help me to think about food and whether what I eat can help create peace’. She explained: ‘I think food and land are going to be a cause of conflict as land is taken up by big business to grow food for the West. I thought I would use this experience to see how far I can bring down my consumption of foods, like meat, which are so bad for the environment’.
Several people who have already ‘lived below the line’ cite extreme tiredness as a problem. Nonetheless, Christian Aid’s Joe Ware said he is glad to have taken the challenge and has been left with a deep appreciation of his usual diet.

Pundits say that 19% of our national diet is meat. If we reduce that to 4% we can be self sufficient for our populations food, as the land released can be used to grow more of other foods.
