Banbury hosts sustainability forum
Banbury Meeting hosts its second annual sustainability forum
Banbury Meeting’s second annual sustainability forum has been hailed as a great success. The clerk to Banbury Meeting, Judith Mason, said the forum was attended by over a hundred people, including Tony Baldry, MP for Banbury. She continued: ‘It went extremely well. It was good to have a range of speakers coming from the same things at different angles. The fact that we had food drew people together before the talks began.’ There were four speakers at this year’s event, which was chaired by colonel John Bridgeman.
Oliver Tickell, journalist and campaigner on health and environment issues, began by explaining the alternative energy sources in use in different parts of the world, including solar power.
Sarah Staunton-Lamb, who heads an Earthwatch programme that trains and empowers young scientists to take on the environmental challenges faced by their home countries, spoke next.
Environment researcher and Friend Paul Mobbs gave a local picture of the geological structures of ‘Banburyshire’, which are being explored for possible new sources of gas. He explained the different challenges that might arise from various forms of extraction.
Independent economist Steve Mandel warned that there has to be a limit to growth as growth inevitably increases our use of finite resources on our finite planet.
Tony Baldry, in an email, said the forum was ‘extremely thought provoking, interesting and genuinely stimulating. Hopefully, this has now become an annual fixture and I look forward to next year’s sustainability forum.’
