‘Awakening Compassion’ in London

Friends took part in a monthly animal rights event in London

by Rebecca Hardy 19th October 2018

Four members of Quaker Concern for Animals (QCA) joined a monthly event in Trafalgar Square, London entitled ‘Awakening Compassion’.

The event on 15 September was organised by a group called ‘We Are The Numbers’ and encourages kindness towards all through a vegan lifestyle.

Julie Hinman, from the QCA Committee, told the Friend it is ‘a silent action in which some participants hold beautiful pictures of animals such as cows, pigs, rabbits, sheep or chickens with messages aimed to make passers-by stop to think, such as “I am an Animal – Someone not Something”.’

Julie Hinman added that, although QCA is not an exclusively vegan group, ‘members often wish to show solidarity with those who, in different ways, advocate for animal rights’.

QCA representatives also joined protests on 15 September against the fur trade and in support of a call to end greyhound racing.

Correction (2 November 2018): In the news story ‘“Awakening Compassion” in London’ (19 October) it was stated that fourteen members of Quaker Concern for Animals (QCA) took part in the ‘Awakening Compassion’ event. It should have said four members of QCA took part.
