The hundredth anniversary of the Armenian genocide has been maked by the World Council of Churches (WCC).

Karekin II, the head of the Armenian Apostolic Orthodox Church, welcomed the executive committee of the WCC to the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin last week.

The committee met in Armenia from 7-12 June. While there, they attended a public service of remembrance in Yerevan.

WCC moderator Agnes Abuom read a statement from her group at the service.

She said: ‘In this centenary year, we call the international community, the WCC’s member churches and all people of faith and good will to remembrance, and to re-commit to the prevention of genocide and all crimes against humanity.’

The Religious Society of Friends is a member of the WCC, for whom they run the Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel (EAPPI). Its UK and Ireland activities are coordinated by Quaker Peace & Social Witness (QPSW).
