Friends House was the setting for an anniversary celebration on World Animal Day, 4 October.

Members of Quaker Concern for Animals (QCA) took the opportunity to mark an important milestone.

The organisation celebrated 125 years of action for animals by launching a new publication, Journeys of Compassion.

The anthology of writings and images charts QCA’s journey from its birth in 1891 as the Friends Anti-Vivisection Association. It was launched in the bookshop at Friends House, in the presence of several members of QCA.

The café and restaurant served specially prepared meat-free menus throughout the day, and the bookshop organised a display of suitably themed titles. These ranged from works on animal ethics to books on vegan cookery.

World Animal Day is sponsored by the Naturewatch Foundation and aims ‘to raise the status of animals in order to improve welfare standards around the globe’.
