‘An eternity before us’

Angela Howard, clerk of the Quaker Fellowship for Afterlife Studies, writes about a concern

Recently, I had a phone call from a Friend in distress. The message was typical of many that I have received over the years. I feel it is time to speak out.

The distress was caused because the Friend concerned was unable to speak openly to anyone in his Meeting about an experience he had had: the experience of contact from a recently deceased and much loved partner. The fact that such contacts frequently take place after the death of someone who has been very close seems, unfortunately, not to be understood by the majority of Friends. This mirrors the situation in society generally.
