A Labour election poster from the 1930s shows four men standing on a ladder in rising floodwater. The topmost – his wealth indicated by top hat and tailcoat – turns to those beneath him whose coats are inscribed with their descending levels of income and says: ‘Equality of sacrifice – that’s the big idea friends. Let’s all step down one rung.’ The nose of the unemployed man on the lowest rung is only inches above the water. It is as clear an illustration of the inequality and injustice of ‘austerity’ as you could wish to see. It is also a reminder of the bubble in which so many of the comfortable continue to lead their lives.
