First all age unprogrammed Meeting for Worship in Large Meeting House

by Elinor Smallman 31st May 2013

Friends of all ages came together in an unprogrammed Meeting for Worship for the first time in the Large Meeting House on Sunday.  Meeting began with a Friend reading God’s Quiet Things by Nancy Sweetland. Ministry in the form of stories, songs and sharing soon flowed.

Memories of pond dipping were pondered by one Friend, who considered which creature he would like to be: not a pond scorpion or a caddisfly larva, but the water beetle, which collects a bubble of air from the surface, here was a creature he could relate to… ‘regularly collecting something bright and beautiful from above me to help me carry on living a bit longer’.

The tale of a one-legged magpie, which a Friend encountered upon moving into her new flat, sent a gentle ripple of laughter through the room as she observed: ‘when you’re a one-legged magpie you can’t do anything but live adventurously’.

‘Let the light shine and let the silence ring’… things took a lyrical turn as another Friend shared a folk song he had penned… ‘Look into your heart and let your soul sing’. A three-year-old Friend was moved to stand, informing those present ‘I love you all’ before singing ‘Baa baa black sheep’.

The wag of a dog’s tale was a quiet thing that lifted one Friend’s heart. Another spoke of a dog’s love and how it has shown him something about God’s love.

Friends also heard the story of God’s Fool – a wonderful clown who loved God so much that he became a monk… but was awful at it. When his fellow monks discovered him sneaking into the chapel to juggle and sing, they found a light shining from the figure of Christ, no longer on the cross but sat on the steps and delighting in the fool discovering ‘how he could best serve the God he loved’.
