Ada Salter commemorated
Ada Salter's birthday was marked by the Quaker Socialist Society
The Quaker Socialist Society (QSS) celebrated the birthday of Quaker social reformer and environmentalist Ada Salter last month, who was born in 1866.
The day included the opening of a room in a hall in Bermondsey named after the Victorian pacifist who transformed the local streets with her tree-planting and ‘beautification’ schemes.
Sheila Taylor, QSS committee member, who organised the event on 20 July, told the Friend: ‘Our tenants and residents Association runs a community hall in Bermondsey, and we decided to name a room after Ada and put up a framed picture about her life. The event celebrated Ada Salter, the “peaceful environmentalist”. It included a guided walk around the Wilson Grove estate which she designed, and three talks on her environmental policies, her peace work and her support for conscientious objectors.’
Mark Smith, of YouthQuakeNow, said they had a #QuakerSocialistDay on Twitter ‘to celebrate both the birthday of Ada Salter and continuing work of QSS’.
