Some 1000 Friends, representing one 150 Meetings, travelled to St. Joseph, Minnesota earlier this month for the Friends General Conference (FGC) gathering.

Friends from the United States were joined by Quakers from Canada, Belize and Guatemala for a week of worship, music, activism and community. The theme was: ‘Be Humble. Be Faithful. Be Bold’.

Among the speakers was Nekima Levy-Pounds, professor of law at the University of St Thomas School of Law and founding director of the Community Justice Project. Her subject was ‘Pursuing justice requires boldness’. Rex Ambler of Britain Yearly Meeting spoke on ‘Living in dark times’. Music also played a part at the gathering. Singer-songwriter Larry Long presented his well-known American Roots Review. He was joined by Waubanewquay Day, a Midewiwin Native keeper of the song, and gospel artist Tonia Hughes.

Friends were ‘urged to be faithful to the testimonies of the Quaker path’ and ‘challenged to bold action’.

The Gathering has met annually since 1963.
