A Remembrance Day to remember

Bradford Meeting to hold two events

by The Friend Newsdesk 1st November 2013

On Remembrance Sunday, 10 November, Bradford Meeting and other concerned groups are organising two events as the start of their commemoration of the onset of the first world war.

In Centenary Square, Bradford, they will hold a kick-around football match in the spirit of that played between opposing sides on the Western Front during the 1914 Christmas truce. At the time all hostilities were stopped and common needs for peace were expressed.

Chris Butler told the Friend: ‘Our match is intended to be fun. Anyone can join in irrespective of age, sex, nationality or physical ability. The match will end when a century – 100 goals – have been scored. Every participant will get a certificate explaining why this match has been played.’

In the evening there will be an evening of ‘Reflections on war and peace with poetry, prose and song’ at the Delius Centre. Chris said: ‘All are welcome. Contact me for further details: christopherbutler1@mac.com
