A new morality

Patricia Gosling believes that any new morality must be based on our understanding of the world

It is an ordinary morning. The BBC news informs us of yet another paedophile ring. This one involved people who are amongst the highest echelons of our society.

An unsolicited telephone voice offers to repair the malfunctioning software on our computer – for a certain fee. Unfortunately for him, we do not actually use this particular software, so his scam fails; but we wonder how many others are taken in.

As I drive along a notoriously dangerous stretch of road, with no inclination to exceed the speed limit, I am ‘cut up’ by a car zooming past to overtake me on a bend. All this before midday! In exasperation, I mutter to my companion: ‘We surely do need a new morality!’

I expect that many share my sentiment – but where can it come from? On what basis can it be built?
