Why are Quakers considered dangerous?

by Tara Craig 14th October 2016

Gerald Conyngham of Exeter Meeting was a guest on BBC Radio Devon’s Maggy Whitehouse show on Sunday 2 October during Quaker Week.

When asked why Quakers are considered dangerous, Gerald explained that: ‘We challenge the status quo. We don’t accept the prevailing culture. That was true in the seventeenth century and it’s equally true now.’

He continued: ‘We don’t accept, for instance, the way we go to war so easily. We don’t accept lots of things about our economy, the emphasis on consumerism and materialism. We don’t accept hierarchies. It’s about challenging things. We have a vision of a very different kind of world.’

Gerald reviewed the Sunday papers, spoke about events in Syria, discussed the prospect of a third runway at Heathrow and talked about Quakers’ concern with climate change.
