A different kind of Pride
Pride 2012 took place on 7 July
There were no floats, no crowd control barriers, not much sunshine and very little music. The ‘antis’ were up close on the pavement again. We prayed at them, waved our banner, sang ‘Leather Breeches’ and ‘Shaggy Locks’ and walked by. It was lovely to have enough Friends to raise a chorus.
It was my daughter Lucy’s tenth Pride and she seems to think it was the best. The handful of chocolate may have had some bearing on her verdict, but what swung it for me was marching down Lower Regent street under the flags of the world alongside a Friend who could actually name some of them for us! Pride, friends, education and chocolate – what more do a mum and daughter want?
Our hastily made Quaker sign attracted lots of support for us as Quakers. Any Friends in doubt that we are making a difference, go to Pride and witness the affection for us. It’s heartwarming.
