A call from Busan

Janet Scott concludes her report from the World Council of Churches’ (WCC) assembly in Busan, South Korea

‘I am ready to go to prison but is there not another way, a way of peace!’ This was the plea of a young Korean man, planning to be a conscientious objector (CO) to military service in a country that sends its COs to prison. A large proportion of the COs in prison around the world are in South Korea. He was addressing a meeting of the historic peace churches (Quakers, Mennonites and Church of the Brethren) on the last evening of the assembly.
