A blessing in disguise

Richard Thompson reflects on when little things go wrong.

The first Quakers were encouraged to ‘look within’ and see themselves as they really were. George Fox exhorted them: ‘Your strength is to stand still, after ye see yourselves.’ The results were stunning. They underwent huge hardship with courage. Big things went wrong, like imprisonment, confiscation of property, persecution and forced emigration.
