White feathers in Devizes

Barbara Toyne reflects on a Sunday with a difference in Devizes

It was a very special Meeting for Worship, as about fifteen of us, including four children, gathered in the dappled shade of the Old Quaker Burial Ground in Devizes, now a leafy enclosure within the larger setting of Hillworth Park.

A mature oak at the centre of this historic place creates a natural atmosphere for an outdoor Quaker Meeting. There was silence at ground level; but an excited twittering in the branches above seemed to be the response of the bird population to the novel event. I’m sure I wasn’t the only one who thought of saint Francis!
