Speaking to a report on simplification, Carolyn Hayman of BYM trustees acknowledged that this work needed to connect with other structural reviews. The simplification working group was comprised of members of central committes and included younger Friends. Its vision statement looked to ‘joyful participation’ in Quaker work, and workshops held around the country had tested some new forms of participation. But not all participation was in governance, she said, which she divided in four ways: conscience (meaning governance of issues like raciscm or same-sex marriage); stewardship (resources); planning; and diplomacy (sharing the Light with others). These were functions not bodies, she said, but suggested a place to start.
