From certificates to clutches

Quaker marriage certificate

With reference to Laurie Andrews’ letters (15 and 22 February), I am surprised that the legal standing of the Quaker marriage certificate has not been questioned.

My parents told me that their certificate was a legal document, and it was respected as such, in addition to its sentimental value. Further, when I worked in the civil service a Friend sent in the Quaker certificate as proof of her marriage. My assertion as to its validity was, rightly, not accepted as sufficient evidence and my manager sought legal advice, which confirmed my statement. It is difficult to see why the ruling should have changed in the last forty to fifty years.

This is of some importance to Friends and needs a clear direction on the issue.
